I am oddly fascinated by people who live in very cold places and are in a constant state of survival. Crummey's novel is about a brother and sister who are orphaned and left to figure out how to survive on the coast of an isolated island in Newfoundland. They know very little of the outside world aside from a ship that arrives twice a year to buy the fish they harvest in the summer and give them supplies for the winter. The siblings are completely dependent on each other and are very close while also being lost in their own individual worlds. As their relationships intensify and outsiders slip in and out of their world, the stakes are raised for the siblings. Crummy did incredible research to capture the landscape and dialect of remote Newfoundland, and the lyricism sings in this novel. This book will stay with me for a long time, and even makes me feel a bit (or a lot!) better about our own Vermont winter.
